“@theeagleonline needs to stop using violence, rape, women’s bodies as pr/readership strategy! tell them - and their sponsors. #fuckshitup”
I’ve been reading over all this Eagle Newspaper drama this week, furtively gleaning all the torment and fury in the meek yet hungry way Facebook so easily facilitates. Errrm try to make this brief:
A backbone to this Knepper kid’s argument is that you’ll have to accept the risk and danger in sex. Define risk? Define danger? To me, risk and danger fall into what we absolutely cannot control. Having sex with a condom that has a 2% chance of breaking could be a risk. You can’t help it! But there is so much implicit control in consensual sex. Someone could have a rape fantasy, which is weird and socially unacceptable but hey we’re human, but even that has a lot of control to it. Consensus doesn’t kill sex, it doesn’t lead to vanilla sex of neutral blobs doing it missionary and then crying over the inequalities of humanity. Consensus, and being clear what you’re allowing, can tell a person “You can’t sleep with me” or “You can sleep with me but don’t do bla, bla, bla, and blah” or “I am allowing you to do some REALLY fucked up things!” Consensus can open doors to risk and experimentation.
And maybe I’m wrong, but this is where I draw the line on what is date rape:
1) A drunk girl at a frat party goes into a guy’s room. He’s drunk too. He tries to have sex with her. She’s very drunk but is begging for him to stop, she’s telling him he doesn’t want sex. He tells her that because she went to a frat party she she “deserved it” and rapes her. That is date rape.
2) A drunk girl at a frat party goes into a guy’s room. He is drunk too. He tries to have sex with her. She drunkenly accepts. They have sex. The next day, she regrets her decision and calls it rape. Is that rape? I don’t think it is.
Well it seemed to me like this kid’s article was condemning both. A woman doesn’t have to have to be reponssible for existing, for having breasts and a vagina. I want to live in a world where a woman is never thought to be “asking for it”
ps guys can get raped too! We know this.
